Hagstone Folklore & Properties

A Hagstone, also known as an Adder Stone, Witch Stone, or Fairy Stone, is simply a rock with a naturally occurring hole worn through it, often by running water or mollusks (like limpets).

Despite their simple geological origins, they have been considered powerful charms and amulets across many cultures for centuries.

Protection from Evil:

This is the most common association. The hole is believed to be a physical barrier. Folklore suggests that only good fortune and good wishes can pass through the hole, while bad luck, curses, and evil spirits are too large or unable to pass through and get "stuck" in the middle. They were historically hung over doors, windows, and in barns to protect people, homes, and livestock from witches' spells and the Evil Eye.

Seeing Other Realms:

Looking through the hole in a hagstone is said to allow a person to see through a witch's or fairy's disguise, or even to glimpse the realm of the Fae (fairies) or spirits.

Sailor's Charm:

Historically, sailors would tie a hagstone to their ships to prevent witches from clinging to the vessel and to help ward off storms.

Dream Protection:

They were often hung above a bed to prevent nightmares or the feeling of being "hag-ridden" (a term for sleep paralysis often blamed on a witch or hag).

Healing and Health:

Hagstones were believed to offer protection from illness and disease, and were even thought to cure snake bites (hence the name "Adder Stone").

As an Amulet:

When worn as a necklace, it's considered a personal amulet for protection, good luck, and health.

The belief that the hole, created by moving water, acts as a "shield" against magic is a key element in its protective power.
